2023 Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Public Notice Newsflash-2

The Lake County Solid Waste Management District Household Hazardous Waste program is for residential, household hazardous waste for Lake County, Indiana, residents and is NOT for businesses, schools, organizations or those who live outside Lake County.

Businesses, schools and organizations of Lake County can call 219-853-2420 for resource information.

Loads are limited to 100 pounds. Latex paint is not accepted. Visit www.lcswmd.com for more information. Proof of Lake County, Indiana, residency is required.  

2023 Household Hazardous Waste Collection Schedule

All Collections are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. 

MAY
Saturday, May 20
Hobart Public Works: 340 S. Shelby St., Hobart

JUNE
Saturday, June 3
Hudson Campbell Center: 455 Massachusetts St., Gary

JULY
Saturday, July 29
Highland Public Works: 8001 Kennedy Ave., Highland

AUGUST
Saturday, Aug. 19
Whiting Public Works: 1915 Front St., Whiting

SEPTEMBER
Saturday, Sept. 9**
Lowell Middle School, North Parking Lot: 19250 Cline Ave., Lowell
**Shredding will be available at this collection with a limit of 4 paper grocery bags per car.

Saturday, September 23**
Hammond Public Works: 601 Conkey St., Hammond
**Shredding will be available at this collection with a limit of 4 paper grocery bags per car.

OCTOBER
Saturday, October 21
Griffith Public Works: 134 S. Colfax St., Griffith

• Aerosols
• Ammunition
• Antifreeze
• Automotive fluids
• Batteries (Household only; NO car batteries)
• Compact fluorescent lights
• Corrosives 
• Diesel
• Flammable liquids
• Fluorescent tubes
• Fungicides
• Gasoline
• Herbicides
• Insecticides
• Kerosene
• Medication (Expired and unwanted)
• Mercury-containing products
• Oils and other fluids
• Oil-based paint
• Pesticides
• Poisons
• Sharps (Medical needles in a rigid container)
• Solvents
• Thermometers (In a sealed bag)
• Thermostats (In a sealed bag)
• Thinners
• Waste fuels


What is NOT accepted?

• Household hazardous waste from businesses, schools, or non-profit organizations
• Asbestos
• Auto/Back-Up/Boat/Truck Batteries
• Containers larger than five (5) gallons
• Explosives/Fireworks (Please contact your local Fire Department for disposal)
• Large grill propane cylinders
• Medical waste (Other than medications and sharps) ((Controlled medications WILL NOT be accepted))
• Radioactive materials (Smoke detectors)
• Latex paint
